Shoe Storage for Every Space

My clients never seem to have enough shoe storage. Even the ones with extremely high-end, fully custom closets (like this beauty shown above by Inspired Closets) still have shoe storage challenges. Here are some of my favorite shoe products to make storing your shoes a little more efficient.

Standalone shoe rack

This 3-tier wooden shoe bench from Wayfair can double as a decorative table and is also sturdy enough to sit on to lace your shoes.

I love having a small bench-style shoe rack right by the door because it’s a quick easy place to kick off the shoes you wore that day until you are ready to tidy up and put them away. It also gives guests a place to store their shoes when they visit. Remember not to let it get cluttered. Limit yourself to 2-3 pairs to keep it from becoming a catch-all area.

Tip-out shoe cabinets

These shoe cabinets store shoes in less than 10 inches of depth. They are perfect for narrow hallways and smaller apartments. If you need your shoes by the door ready to go, you’ll love these cabinets. Here are a few of my favorites:

Door Shoe Storage

Doors were made for storing shoes, right? Here are my favorite door-based shoe storage solutions that make the most of the vertical space when you don’t have much closet space for shoes.

Boot Challenges

I love a boot, but they are a challenge to organize because of the amount of space they take up.

If you’ll be storing your boots upright, I recommend you use boot forms. They extend the life of your boots, prevent unsightly creases, and allow the insides to dry properly to prevent odor. Besides, boots look so nice when they have good posture.

An inexpensive hack is to make your own using pool noodles. If you can afford them, these cedar ones or these quilted ones are lovely. Here is a more affordable plastic alternative.

Another way to store your boots is upside down in a rack like this one:

Or, you can hang boots in a system like this:

Under the Bed

Don’t neglect the potential storage space under your bed. I keep all my dressy shoes in an under-bed box because my space is very limited in my San Francisco closet. Here are some under-bed boxes made for shoes:

Shoe Storage Boxes

If you have the space for shoe storage boxes in your closet, consider yourself very lucky because they keep your shoes dust-free while looking fabulous in your closet. I love boxes with clear windows so you can see exactly what’s inside. Here are two recommendations: these Cambridge Drop-Front Shoe Boxes from the Container Store are an all-time favorite among luxury closets. These plastic stackable drop-front shoe bins are wonderful too and can make good use of floor space under shelves or hanging clothes. They are also great to use in dustier areas like a garage because they clean up easily.

Shelf Storage

If you are storing your shoes on shelves, consider these shoe stackers if you have a lot of ballet flats or loafers. They make the most of your shelf space and are adjustable and look great too.

Shoe Stackers from The Container Store make the most of shelf space

Another idea for storing shoes on shelves is to use a shoe bag to prevent dust and lint buildup. These are also wonderful for travel because they keep your clothes safe from your shoes and your shoes safe from other items in your luggage.

There are endless options for shoe bags, but I prefer these or these because they have a clear strip at the bottom and they are good for extra large men’s shoes or ankle boots. The Container Store makes a nice zip-style shoe bag and a completely clear drawstring bag. 100% cotton muslin bags are also available and work great for shoe storage and for travel.

That’s all I have for now! I hope this post has been helpful and given you some ideas about shoe storage so you can enjoy your shoe collection instead of stressing out about space. Until next time: be calm, be organized, be you.
